Aden, Yemen: The non-governmental organization CARE warned today that nearly 30,000 families have been affected by the rains that Yemen has experienced since last July, causing floods that destroyed infrastructure and damaged agriculture.
A statement issued by the non-governmental entity explained that the rains hit 18 out of 21 provinces in the country, which were destroyed after more than seven years of war.
He stressed that at least 91 people were killed and many more were injured or missing.
The Foundation indicated that 190 sites sheltering more than 12,000 displaced families in Ma’rib governorate were affected by the torrential rains.
Care warned of an increased risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
The NGO Oxfam recently warned that the dangerous situation in the country has worsened in recent months due to rising food prices on the global market.
He noted that Yemen imports 90 percent of its food, including 42 percent of its wheat, from Ukraine.
The World Food Program revealed weeks ago that about 19 million Yemenis, out of a total of 31 million, are food insecure, although the number may rise significantly this year.
The war began in 2014, when Houthi rebels took up arms and occupied large parts of the country, including the capital, Sanaa.
The following year, an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in the conflict to support then-President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who handed power to the new Presidential Leadership Council. (PL)
