NEW YORK – More than a dozen New York City restaurants were awarded their coveted Michelin star for the first time in 2022, joining the world-famous guide to a distinction that many chefs can only dream of one day achieving.
The star ratings and other accolades were announced Thursday at an event at Hudson Yards. In all, 19 newcomers have joined the esteemed roster, two of whom have earned two stars in their first appearances in the Michelin Guide: Al Coro in Chelsea and SAGA in the Financial District.
Michelin, the most prestigious industry classifier since 1955, gives restaurants one to three stars, and earning even one can change the fate of a restaurant. One star generally means high-quality cuisine, as in, well worth a stop, while two stars mean it’s worth the detour and three stars for, well, this is exceptional cuisine and “worth a special trip,” says Michelin.
There were also 11 restaurants that lost their one-star rating, perhaps the most notable being Peter Luger, the famous steakhouse that was set on fire by a critic in 2019.
Here’s a breakdown by county (plus Westchester County) for each restaurant, along with the number of stars each restaurant has earned:
