The New Zealand national team, with its share of opportunism, defeated Guatemala 1-0 in the Argentina 2023 U-20 World Cup Group A opener this Saturday.
At the Único Madre de Ciudades Stadium in Santiago del Estero, striker Norman Corbett capitalized on Finn Kanji’s excellent long pass to score the winning goal.

Although Guatemala came close to converting, New Zealand were more effective and held on until the end.
The Central American team had a slight advantage during an even first half with no possession. Goalkeeper Keys Sims controlled a header from Carlos Santos and a shot from Figo Montano.
The Guatemalan national team controlled Jay Herdman, New Zealand’s best player, and had no problems.
The second half started with a shot from Jackson Manuel for the maritime champions, but Guatemala responded with a finish from Archimedes Ordonez, which Simms sent into the corner with an effort.
The Central American team controlled the game, but goalkeeper Jorge Moreno suffered a blow that forced him to be carried off on a stretcher, halting play for several minutes. At the conclusion, Corbett appeared one-on-one against Fausto Delgado, who was allowed to change the course of history.
Guatemala will face Argentina and New Zealand will face Uzbekistan on the next date. Both matches will be played next Tuesday at the Madre de Cuudades stadium.
