Within 18 months of the law coming into force, Transgender, transgender, transgender and LGBT persons do not need proof of medical treatment or family court notice to change the gender listed on their birth certificate.Rather, they can be asked to change it based on how they identify themselves.
Maritime Country introduced legislation in 2018 allowing self-identification on birth certificates, but applicants must prove that they have undergone medical treatment to adjust their gender and gender identity.
The amendment, which was unanimously approved on Thursday, eliminates that need, even if it excludes refugees, asylum seekers and recent immigrants.
“The bill recognizes that those who need to amend their birth certificate can do so. The courts do not have the right to make that decision for them, nor do parents have that right.” Green Party MP Elizabeth Greker said.
Supported to support the move, the deputy said, “After generations of systematic discrimination, decades of community service and years of working in this house, it is with great pleasure that we approve this amendment.” Speech collected on public broadcast Radio New Zealand.
For his part, Interior Minister John Dinette promised that Parliament had voted “in favor of inclusion and against discrimination” for “a glorious day in Adotrova’s history (New Zealand’s name).”
Many states in the United States such as California, Washington and New York, and Latin American and European countries such as Argentina or Denmark allow the birth certificate to be changed without the signature of a medical officer.
