The nearest supermarket and hospital are two and four hours away respectively. Additionally, mobile phone coverage is spotty.
The New Zealand Department of Defense (DOC) has announced an inevitable job opening for many. This is a vacancy for a Biodiversity Supervisor at Haast on the western edge of Mount Spring National Park in the South Island.
The position offers a salary of $40,000 to $50,000 per year, depending on the applicant’s skills, and requires traveling by boat or helicopter to lush tropical forests, glaciers and mountains to protect kiwis, penguins and reptile populations. They are on the verge of extinction as well as monitor the local fauna.
Despite offering attractive salaries and working conditions that are unbeatable for conservationists, only three people had applied for the job as of Wednesday, DOC director of operations Wayne Costello told Stuff.
“This [una oferta] Simply spectacular. But it’s not for everyone. You should be self-sufficient and know how to work outdoors,” said the official. He argued that the low number of applicants was due to a lack of local staff and the site’s remote location.
As described, the nearest supermarket and hospital are two and four hours away respectively. Also, cell phone coverage can be a problem for some.
However, he emphasized that those selected will have the opportunity to live with “incredibly friendly locals”. Some families, “pioneers in the practice of agriculture and fishing in that part of the world,” were far from the country.
Applicants must demonstrate practical experience in the field and mountains, strong navigational skills including map reading and GPS, as well as knowledge of environmental protection. This invitation is valid till November 1.
