Omoda is gearing up to launch new SUVs in New Zealand

Must Read

Chinese automaker Omoda is in the process of launching new SUVs in New Zealand, including an electric model, to compete with brands like MG and GWM. The Omoda C5 is available with either a 1.5-litre or a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers outputs of 108kW/210Nm or 145kW/290Nm respectively. Front-wheel drive is standard, while the 1.6-litre variant also offers four-wheel drive. The C5 has a CVT transmission.

The E5, on the other hand, is fully electric, equipped with a 150kW/340Nm single-motor powertrain and a 61kWh battery. It has a WLTP-certified range of up to 450 km on a single charge and supports DC fast charging, which takes the battery from zero to 80% in less than 35 minutes.

Omota models in New Zealand are expected to have standard features such as dual 10.25-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay, dual wireless phone charging and Sony audio. Optional extras include a power tailgate, sunroof, heated steering wheel and front seats, power-adjustable passenger seat, 360-degree camera, low beam projection and red brake calipers.

The Omoda C5 has received a five-star rating from ANCAP. Final pricing and specifications are yet to be confirmed, but are expected to be announced soon. The first models are scheduled to hit the New Zealand market in the first half of 2024, with competitive prices expected, especially for the electric variant.

In addition to the Omoda line, the Jaecoo 7 and Jaecoo 9 models are expected to be sold in New Zealand under the Jaecoo sub-brand, which is part of Chery. These vehicles are of more advanced design and are available with internal combustion engines or plug-in hybrids. Details about the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 models, which have been confirmed for the Australian market, suggest that they may also be introduced in New Zealand.
