Bloomberg – OpenAI and Salesforce Inc. have signed a contract agreement. (CRM) and other technology companies an open letter highlighting a “Collective responsibility” to “maximize the benefits of AI.” and mitigate risks” to society, in the latest effort by the technology industry to advocate for building artificial intelligence responsibly.
In a post on a social media platform, Altman stated that progress in the field of artificial intelligence “will be one of the most important factors in improving people’s quality of life.” Hugging Face, Scale AI, and dozens of other startups and technology companies were also named as signatories to the letter.
In the year since OpenAI's ChatGPT launched and brought AI into the public consciousness, many in the industry have extolled the benefits of the technology and sounded the alarm about its significant risks. In May, leaders in the AI field, including Altman, signed a letter warning that AI could lead to the extinction of humanity.
In S.V. Angel's letter, The impact of AI is compared to other innovations such as the printing press, the internal combustion engine, electricity, and the Internet. “The balance between its positive and negative effects on humans will be shaped by the actions and thinking we engage in as humans,” the letter said. “It is our collective responsibility to make decisions that maximize the benefits of AI and mitigate the risks, both for today and for future generations.” However, the letter does not list specific procedures to achieve this.
The letter comes days after Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the AI market leader, alleging that the startup violated its founding mission by putting economic profit before the well-being of humanity. In an internal memo, OpenAI said it “categorically disagrees” with Musk's request.
