Miami (AFP) – Poland’s Iga Swiatek starts 2023 on top of women’s tennis despite being eliminated in the round of 16 at the Australian Open, the first major tournament of the year.
Since taking the top spot in the WTA on April 4 last year, Swiatek has continued to rack up weeks off the No. 1 ranking.
The finalist of the tournament, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, was knocked out by Swiatek in Australia.
In second place is Belarusian Arina Sabalenka, Australian champion.
Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maya ranked best in Latin America, ranking 14th, followed by Colombian Camila Osorio, ranked 73rd.
Meanwhile, Spaniard Paula Badusa, who was among the top five in 2022, dropped to 21st place, while her compatriot Garbiñe Muguruza continued from bad to worse and is already in 82nd place.
