Since Thursday, the couple has focused on projects related to children, education and combating cyberbullying, topics that have been a priority in their charitable activities.
Meghan surprised the little ones with a smile, commenting in Spanish: “You’re the same age as my son Archie!”, creating an instant connection with the children. Harry, for his part, was also encouraged to practice the language, asking for the students’ names and ages.
The Duchess of Sussex, who has considerable experience with the Spanish language due to her training at the US Embassy in Buenos Aires and her studies in Madrid, has demonstrated her proficiency in the language on other occasions.
In 2020, during a visit to Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, Megan spoke fluent Spanish to a young woman, surprising the group’s founder, Father Greg Boyle, who described the scene as a revelation. This time, in Bogotá, Megan once again demonstrated her skill, adding a special touch to her interactions with Colombian children.
The Dukes’ tour did not stop at Bogotá. They also visited other emblematic areas of Colombia, including Cartagena and Cali, where they had the opportunity to engage with local leaders, young people and women committed to the country’s progress.
Interested in local culture
In Cartagena de Indias, the Dukes immersed themselves in local culture with a visit to the Cabildo de la Boquilla Drum Workshop School. Here, Harry and Meghan were able to learn first-hand about African traditions that form part of Colombia’s rich cultural heritage, and took part in an ancestral drum workshop with children and young people from the region.
This event was a milestone in his journey, as it confirmed his interest in the country’s cultural roots and his commitment to promoting diversity and cultural understanding.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit to Colombia not only strengthened ties between the country and the royal couple, but also highlighted the importance of education, inclusion and respect for local cultures.
