LIMA, July 15 (RHC) The Peruvian government announced Saturday that 24,000 police will maintain order in the capital, in the face of imminent opposition protests, and the Council of State has received criticism for calling for the legitimate use of force against them.
“We currently have 24,000 soldiers prepared and trained to respond to the expectations,” said the Minister of the Interior, Vicente Romero, about the start of the protests on the 19th of this month, identified by the Coordinator of Social Organizations. To demand the resignation of President Dina Polorat.
He added that the National Police had a comprehensive plan of operations, taking into account what he called “extremely violent social protests”, that is, those that took place between last December and March against the rise of Pulwart as successor to Pedro Castillo, in which 49 people died. civilians.
Within the framework of the government’s preparations, the police carried out, yesterday, a show of force, with a parade of five thousand soldiers and armored vehicles.
For its part, the State Council, at the invitation of the President, held a meeting, which was unusual.
He also issued a document supporting the executive authority and requesting that the marches be peaceful.
“We call on the authorities to apply the legitimate use of force, in accordance with the law, and to guarantee the safety and security of those who will participate in the march, as well as the peace and tranquility of those who decide not to do so,” the document added, among other points.
Former Prime Minister Mertha Vasquez considered this message a threat, and in her address to Alberto Otarola – who currently occupies this position and is reading the text – she said: “It is up to you to invoke respect for the fundamental rights of the people and to defend democratic policies.”
For his part, former parliamentarian and political analyst Alberto Quintanilla stated that the council’s statement is a threat, moreover, it implies, “It orders the use of force, which must be an extreme source. It calls for repression.”
Former Chief Justice Alejandro Salas, in turn, criticized that the government did not seek dialogue with society or find solutions to the crisis after six months of administration.
How is the prime minister summoned to the authorities for the legitimate use of force? Presumably a government that has civilian control over law enforcement, what are you talking about? You are the authorities. These are the political leaders, warned political analyst Daniel Encinas.
For sociologist Omar Coronel, the government’s repressive preparations “at this point only serve to convince of the enormous danger of doing nothing in the face of the kind of power it wants to consolidate.” (fountain:PL)
