Authorities managed to rescue a man who was stranded in a snowmobile while traveling between two towns in Alaska Thursday morning thanks to a feature on the iPhone 14 that works with satellite technology.
The phone had no cellular service, but the man, who was traveling between the towns of Norvik to Kotzebue, separated by about 70 kilometers, activated the iPhone Emergency SOS via satellite function, which alerted local authorities, CBS News.
The Alaska Department of Public Safety reports that volunteer local search and rescue personnel responded to the man’s location using GPS coordinates provided by Apple’s Emergency Response Center.
The search party found the man and brought him to the town of Kotzebue. The subject was not injured.
Another new iPhone 14 feature that made headlines allows first responders to be alerted if the phone detects a serious car accident.
In October, a passenger’s iPhone alerted first responders when a car crashed into a tree in Lincoln, Nebraska. Six people were killed in the accident.
