In the midst of the campaign to invade Ukraine, and to exclude it from international competitions in almost all sports, Russia has officially expressed its interest in hosting one of the next two European Championships, 2028 or 2032. On Wednesday, UEFA published the deadline for accepting the list of countries that submitted advertisements. Its interest is to host the next two tournaments, whose venues will be chosen at the same time in September 2023.
The Russian move comes after, since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, their stadium for this year’s Champions League final, which was scheduled to be Saint Petersburg on May 28, ran out, and without the possibility of their team qualifying. This year’s World Cup will be played in Qatar, from November 21 to December 18. In recent weeks, all Russian clubs participating in competitions organized by UEFA have also been excluded.
In addition to Russia, the associations of England, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales have submitted a joint declaration of interest in the competition to organize Euro 2028. Turkey also wants to host the tournament, which is also selecting the 2032 edition, together. with Russia and Italy. The final decision for both stadiums will be made within a year and a half, in September 2023.
