Guareno boxer Edison “Toro” Salterin has been doing pre-fight work at the OPPPE 28 venues in Tanagurena as part of his preparation for his international commitment in Nueva this coming April 27th. Zeeland against local Andriy Mikhaylovich, holder of the WBO and IBF (Middleweight) titles at Eventfinda Stadium, North Shore.
“We improve some technical-tactical elements based on the studies we do on the competitor, watching videos of their last fights,” explained their trainer Lino Cordero Jr.
“We’re going to depend on good footwork, blocking, blocking his shots and countering the riposte (counter-attack) going in different directions,” he added.
The 20-year-old, undefeated in 16 bouts, made it a 12-round bout and faced three boxers with different characteristics, both physical and technical.
“First he faced Fernando “Pescador” Brito, who could not keep up with Salterin for only 3 rounds; then he was measured from third to eighth with Romer Brito, who is 1.98 meters tall, and despite his heavy weight and height, Edison was always superior,” said coach Cordero Jr. Commented.
“The ninth and tenth were done with Yorkeys Medina, the 11th with Randy Campos and the 12th with Abraham Medina. In later times, lighter gladiators were used so that they could work the exits for attacks and ripostes at their speed.
A full strategic work plan attempts to insert into Saltarín the various scenarios that may arise during the fight.
Coach Cordero Jr., a New Zealander, is a strong boxer, so the plan is to look for boxers with different physiques and fighting styles similar to the competitor.
Romer Brito, who has a difference in height, Fernando Brito, national champion and lost the South American title in Argentina, eventually “Toro” moves in different directions as a hybrid of small speed men, strong big men and small speed men.
“Mikhailovic is a man with a strong tackle, he uses long and semi-curved shots, takes care of himself with his guard, but our plan is to find technique and strategies to neutralize him.”
Salterin’s commitment requires a lot of concentration and strategy, as his opponent is a careful, old and defending champion with a 19-fight unbeaten record.
However, motivation, youthful energy and a Caribbean spirit, along with a good corner job, can make it big in New Zealand.
