Agents of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) and National Immigration Institute (INM) Mexico has detained 22 Cuban immigrants. The indigenous inhabitants of the island were captured as part of two raids during which dozens of illegal immigrants from different countries were rounded up.
The Cubans were stationed in the municipalities of the state of Veracruz, while they were moving north, towards the border with the United States. The authorities indicated that there were 20 Cubans in a hotel in the Villa Verde neighborhood of Cordoba and two others in Acayucan.
Accurate information confirmed that it all started from a call received by the police warning of the presence of foreigners inside the hotel. Proceeding to search the facility, they found the twenty Cubans in several rooms.
In the municipality of Acayokan, 12 more immigrants from Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti and the faraway African country of Congo were arrested along with the Cubans.
In total, 61 immigrants were transferred to the National Immigration Institute. There they will decide the fate of the detainees.
Migration route through Mexico
Mexico is on the path of immigration to get to the United States. That is why last year more than 200,000 Cubans attempted to cross its territory. While most were successful in their endeavours, hundreds more were arrested and eventually deported back to Cuba.
Mexican authorities have tightened controls in an attempt to stem the flow of migrants, not only from Cuba, but from countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Honduras, and even from African countries.
The agreement reached between the governments of Mexico and the United States to strengthen security at the border between the two countries made headlines this week. The goal is to try and stop the traffic jams for people pursuing the American Dream.
