Anaheim – Angels All-Star hitter and pitcher, Distort mehe will not leave this awards season empty-handed after his stunning 2022 win, after the Edgar Martinez Award winner was named Player of the Year on Monday.
This is the second year in a row that Ohtani has received the award, which was presented annually to the best DH in the majors in 1973 and renamed in Martinez’s honor in 2004. Ohtani is the first player to win the award in back-to-back seasons since it was taken by Dominican David Ortiz, a member of the Hall of Fame, five consecutive years between 2003 and 2007.
This year, Otani outperformed candidates such as Giancarlo Stanton, Bryce Harper, JD Martinez, Dominican Nelson Cruz and Cuban Yordan Alvarez.
Ohtani, 28, hit .273/.356/.519 with 34 runs, 30 doubles, six hits, and 95 RBIs in 157 games in 2022. Ohtani also made 28 starts as a pitcher and was named to those challenges. MLB changed the rules this year to allow Otani to stay in the game as a DH after leaving the game as a pitcher.
Balloting for this award is completed by journalists, storytellers, and staff from various public relations departments. Candidates must have taken at least 100 at bats.
