Russian skater Kamila Valeeva, whose positive doping test rocked the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, was sentenced to four years in prison, counting from December 25, 2021, the Court of Arbitration for Sport announced on Monday.
The results of the 17-year-old prodigy, who was not initially subject to a sanction by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency because it was deemed to have committed “no error or negligence”, will not be counted from the date of the sanction and added that the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the highest judicial authority. In global sports, it will come into play. This means that medals and titles obtained since then will be cancelled.
It all started at the Winter Games in Beijing, in February 2022, when it was learned that Valeeva, then 15 years old, had tested positive for trimetazidine, a banned substance, in a test taken two months earlier. When the news broke, Valeeva had already won the Olympic team gold medal, and because the case had yet to be resolved, she was able to continue competing, later finishing fourth in the individual final.
The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (Rusada) decided to provisionally suspend Valeeva, but the athlete appealed to the agency's disciplinary committee, which later upheld her claim. The Court of Arbitration for Sport then had to make a first decision on the case, after receiving resources from the IOC, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Ski Federation, against the position of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency.
