SHIC’s mission to protect and improve the health of pigs in America remains; This annual review of projects and priorities guides the actions of the action plan, which will be divided into four sections:
1) Monitor and mitigate risks to pig health
SHIC, along with the Food and Agriculture Research Foundation and Pork Checkoff, have teamed up to fund and launch the Wean-to-Harvest Biosecurity Program.
African swine fever will continue to be a priority for surveillance in 2023, with the goal of preventing the introduction of African swine fever into the United States.
2) Response to emerging diseases
It is not possible to predict when or where the next disease will appear, and for this reason, research has been prioritized so that producers know about effective prevention, detection, and response, should diseases enter North America.
The rapid response program will continue to be refined and improved in 2023.
3) Monitoring and detection of emerging diseases
To improve detection of emerging diseases, SHIC will have funds that can be quickly mobilized for research, after a disease emerges.
4) Improve swine health information
he Global Swine Disease Surveillance Report Takes advantage of the willingness of major veterinary diagnostic laboratories to exchange information.
