Lockie Ferguson returned to form with an extraordinary bowling performance of three wickets for zero runs as New Zealand ended their T20 World Cup campaign with a win over Papua New Guinea.

Pacer Ferguson was impressive with his first delivery, taking the wicket of Asad Wala (6) and returning to dismiss Charles Amini (17) and Chad Soper (1).

Tim Southee (2-11), Trent Boult (2-14) and Ish Sodhi (2-29) took 2 wickets each as Papua New Guinea finally batted first and were bowled out for 78 runs.

In reply, Finn Allen fell with the second ball but his opening partner Devon Conway (35), skipper Kane Williamson (18) and Daryl Mitchell (19) helped New Zealand to a 7-wicket win in 7.4 overs to spare.

It means the Black Caps at least end their tournament on a positive note, having been knocked out by group stage defeats in their first two games against Afghanistan and the West Indies.

As for Papua New Guinea, they bid farewell to the World Cup with four defeats in four games.

What’s next for the ICC T20 World Cup?

USA take on South Africa in Antigua on Wednesday in the Super 8 leg of the Men’s T20 World Cup, live on Sky Sports Cricket from 3pm (first pitch 3.30pm).

England’s first appearance in the Super 8s will be against hosts West Indies later in the day in St Lucia, live on Sky Sports Cricket at 1am on Thursday (first pitch 1.30am).

Nasser Hussain believes England have what it takes to qualify for the T20 World Cup semi-finals.

England are in Group 2 for the second leg of the 8-team tournament along with West Indies, USA and South Africa.

Group 1 round-outs Afghanistan and India, as well as Australia and Bangladesh, will meet on Thursday.

The top two teams in each division will advance to the semi-finals.
