T20 World Cup: South Africa survive Nepal scare as New Zealand ease past Uganda

Must Read

Nepal were dismissed in the last ball to avoid ending a historic defeat against South Africa at the T20 World Cup in Kingstown, while New Zealand beat Uganda with ease.

After electing to bowl first, Nepal’s bowling attack – led by Kushal Purdell’s four wickets – gave the little guys every chance to restrict South Africa to 115 for a stunning win.

Openers Burdell and Asif Shaikh started Nepal’s chase strongly, combining for 35 runs before the former was dismissed in the eighth over by Tabriz Shamsi.

However, skipper Rohit Bowdal’s dismissal off the next ball disrupted Nepal’s momentum as Nepal’s four short order left the field for less than 10 runs.

Wicketkeeper Sheikh proved a formidable opponent for the South African bowlers, and his score of 42 – along with Anil Kumar Chaw’s 27 – kept Nepal in the match.

In the end the result came in the last ball with Nepal needing two runs to win.

However, this is not the case for Nepal. Gulshan Jha is dismissed as Otneil Bartman struggles for a boundary.

Shamsi led the way for South Africa’s bowlers, finishing with four for 19, while Reza Hendricks top-scored for the Proteas with 43 off 49 balls.

South Africa’s narrow win came days after the Proteas set a record for the fewest wickets in T20 World Cups.

They struggled again after scoring just 113 runs against Bangladesh on Tuesday.

New Zealand easily won the T20 World Cup against Uganda in the Tetrarpar

New Zealand needed just five overs to beat Uganda as the Black Caps won by nine wickets at the Brian Lara Stadium in Taroua.

After sending Uganda in to bat first, New Zealand’s formidable bowling attack soon made its presence felt against the small cricketing nation.

Simon Szesazi was the first casualty of the day when he was dismissed for a duck by Trent Boult.

Soon after his exit, Robinson Obuya presented Bolt with an early hat-trick opportunity.

Boult was denied but continued to pick up wickets when Tim Southee ducked Alpesh Ramjani in the third over.

Kenneth Waiswa top-scored with 11 as Uganda were bowled out for 40 in the 19th over as wickets continued to fall throughout the innings.

New Zealand won in the sixth over, with wicketkeeper Devon Conway scoring 22 off 15 balls to pave the way for victory.

Ugandan opener Finn Allen was the only wicket to be bowled by Riyazad Ali Shah for 9 runs.

The decisive result came late for New Zealand, who had lost their first two T20 World Cup matches against Afghanistan and West Indies.

The Black Caps crashed out of the tournament with Afghanistan’s seven-wicket win over Papua New Guinea on Friday.
