Havana, March 24 (EFE) – Cuba’s President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, on Friday confirmed his attendance at the 28th Ibero-American Summit, which will meet on Friday and Saturday in the neighboring Dominican Republic.

In his message, he wrote: “We are going to the 2023 summit with pleasure because he always visits the fraternal land of the Generalissimo (Maximo Gomez) and to be part of the cooperation efforts with Ibero-America. Before Sunday, we come back.” Twitter.

The summit concludes on the eve of the island’s parliamentary elections on Sunday, March 26, during which the country’s highest legislative body, the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP), which includes 470 deputies, will be renewed.

The meeting is taking place in the Dominican Republic under the theme “Together for a Just and Sustainable Ibero-America” ​​and includes issues such as food security, the environment, digital rights and a new financial structure on the agenda, according to its organizers. .

On Friday, the foreign ministers’ segment of the summit took place, in which Cuba called for “more comprehensive and better cooperation.”

“More and better cooperation is required between our two countries,” said Director General of Multilateral Affairs and International Law of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rodolfo Benitez.

Benitez confirmed that Cuba has been working to achieve this goal since his presidency of the Group of 77 plus China.

He also criticized the international economic system and stressed that “developing countries are suffering the worst consequences of the current crisis.”

At least 14 heads of state or government from the 22 participating countries are expected to attend, including the Colombian presidents, Gustavo Petro; Chilean, Gabriel Boric, Uruguay, Luis Lacalle, and Argentinian, Alberto Fernandez.

Among the confirmed absences, the Brazilian Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is awaiting an official trip to China, stands out; Mexican Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is not used to going to such appointments, and Salvadoran Nayib Bukele.

This will be the first face-to-face summit since the COVID-19 pandemic began, in 2020, as the summit in Andorra had a hybrid format for this reason. EFE
