To the many feelings I have been experiencing these days in Cuba, the members of the 32nd Friendship of Pastors for Peace Caravan today added another very powerful one: the meeting with the students and the principals of the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), at their headquarters, in Habana.
In the presence of the hero of the Republic of Cuba, Fernando Gonzalez Llorte, President of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with Peoples (ICAP), students from countries such as Kenya, Chile, Palestine, South Sudan and Cambodia thanked these activists for their efforts. Solidarity with this second homeland, which despite its obscurity and material shortcomings, trains them as good doctors.
As some have said and Dr. Yoandra Muro Valle, Campus Director, they are preparing not only to serve their people, or to return to the more complex areas of their home countries, but also with a willingness to help others in need in situations of disaster, just as they have since the idea of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro with ELAM.
Among students’ songs and testimonies about what this project means in their lives, Jill Walker, Director of the Interfaith Foundation for Community Organizations (IFCO) and daughter of Reverend Lucius Walker, initiator of the Pastors Solidarity Program for Peace, highlighted the interest. Many young caravans to study there.
He noted that very few people in the United States, and in other latitudes, want to know more about the Cuban model in terms of training health professionals, for which he proposed the idea of organizing a caravan in 2024 through which different countries can provide material resources for the maintenance and improvement of the infrastructure school infrastructure.
The American activist herself emphasized how the economic, commercial and financial blockade of her government also limits the best development of noble and humanitarian projects like this one, which, according to the director of ELAM in its 18 promotions, has allowed more than 30 to graduate 1,500 new doctors from 119 countries, including 218 from the states United.
After an emotional reception in which members of Pastors for Peace in general learned about the process of selecting students in poor or complex communities, their previous preparation in Cuba for learning Spanish and their level of basic knowledge, they broke into groups, and discussed with the students present at the meeting.
As Dr. Moro Valle, who was in charge of Cuban health assistants in Guatemala and Bolivia, told you, the Latin American School of Medicine fulfills the dreams of Fidel and Reverend Lucius Walker.
He then stated that in addition to working for their graduates to be the best doctors in the world, they at least differentiate themselves by preparing themselves in terms of the universal concept of medicine, humanity, integration, understanding of cultures, and oneness with each of them. each other and live together. Side by side with a heroic people like the Cuban people, who know the resistance and are always ready to help.
Since arriving in Cuba, the 32nd Caravan of Priests for Peace has completed an intense program of activities highlighting the handover on Monday, by Miguel Diaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party and Chairman of the Party. Republic, the Solidarity Medal for this project and the Jill Walker Friendship Medal.
Together with the Juan Ríos Rivera brigade, from Puerto Rico, and the representatives of the Socialist and Liberation Party and the Venceremos Brigade, both from the United States, their members were in Central Action on July 26, in Cienfuegos, and on these days they visited other symbolic centers in the capital of the country.
