Leon, Guanajuato. June 29, 2023- The Gto Health System has started an ‘outpatient’ surgery day at Lyon General Hospital to benefit 220 patients with cataracts.
In coordination with the PRASAD Foundation headed by Ms. Angelica Lapseda and the Association for the Prevention of Blindness in Mexico coordinated by Juan Pablo Olivares de Emparan, in addition to the hospital staff.
Dr. Daniel Alberto Diaz Martínez, Minister of Health reports that since 2017, these conferences have been held with the aim of offering specialized medical care to those suffering from cataracts and strabismus.
“During these years, we have been able to benefit 2,605 people, giving them the opportunity to regain their vision and improve their quality of life.”
The conferences are taking place from June 28th to July 1st at the General Hospital of Lyon, a state-of-the-art hospital with the resources to perform this type of procedure.
“I want to highlight the involvement of PRASAD affiliated physicians, as well as physicians, nurses and social workers from our Department of Health who are part of this team.”
During these conferences, a total of 220 adult patients who would otherwise not have access to this type of surgery will benefit.
It is important to stress that in the private sphere, this procedure can cost up to 30,000 pesos per eye, so during these days social justice is practiced and a unique opportunity is given to those who need it most.
In his letter, the Director of Health Services, Dr. Francisco Javier Magos Vázquez, explained that cataracts are specialties that are not yet covered and that around the world they provide scope for delays in waiting lists in order to benefit from surgery.
He concluded by saying: “Recognizing that the main causes of disability globally, nationally and internationally are blindness and vision loss, and one of these causes is due to cataracts, and we know that it is caused by chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes.”
