KHARTOUM, April 30 (Sputnik): The head of the Human Rights Commission of Sudan, Rifaat Mirghani Abbas, told Sputnik that the Sudanese health system is on the verge of collapse as a result of the ongoing hostilities.

“We are talking about a health system on the brink of collapse, as hospitals have become a battleground for both sides and are being bombed,” he stressed in statements to this agency.

He added that medical personnel work in extremely difficult conditions, exacerbated by the lack of necessary medicines and obstacles to the movement of ambulances.

“We strongly expect the intervention of international and regional organizations to ensure at least a permanent truce,” the official concluded.

Since April 15, Sudan has been the scene of clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces, commanded by Major General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s Sovereign Transitional Council, and the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group that obeys the orders of Gen. Hamdan Dagalo.

According to the Sudanese Ministry of Health, the hostilities left more than 500 people dead and about 4,600 injured. (Sputnik)
