This was stated by the diplomatic headquarters of the northern country and the Communications Secretariat of the Ecuadorian presidency.
The US official will arrive in Quito this Wednesday, and in addition to her meeting with the President, she will meet with Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguín, with whom she will discuss Ecuador’s participation as a member of the UN Security Council for the period 2023-2024.
Next, Thomas Greenfield will travel to Costa Rica to attend the second edition of the Democracy Summit 2023, which media and governments have considered as their first call in 2021.
The US diplomat’s visit to Ecuador comes as President Laso is on the verge of a possible political trial for alleged crimes against the public administration and his approval rating is less than 13 percent, according to opinion polls.
According to analysts, today Ecuador means an area of interest for Washington given the current geopolitical scenario of the Latin American region.
This has become evident after the numerous visits by high-ranking northern officials to this Andean territory, the most recent of which was the visit of a group of congressmen in March.
Starting in the second half of 2022, Laso has received several US authorities, including Christopher J. Dodd, President Joe Biden’s special advisor for the Americas, and US Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorcas.
In addition, a bipartisan Senate delegation headed by Bob Menendez visited Quito; the commander of the United States Southern Command, General Laura Richardson; Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland; and Republican Senator Marco Rubio.
In December, the US Congress approved the Strategic Association Act with Ecuador, a law that has generated divided opinions, while for the Lasso government it is an opportunity to expand cooperation, and for others it is submission and intervention.
