The presidents of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and the United States, Joe Biden, stressed, in a telephone conversation, an alliance to preserve joint actions in the face of regional challenges.

A joint statement published by the Presidency of the Republic indicated that the two leaders discussed migration with a humane approach and the fight against fentanyl and arms smuggling.

The text indicates that they also discussed updating the common border, among other things.

The two presidents followed up on agreements resulting from a visit by Elizabeth Sherwood Randall, President Biden’s national security adviser, who was received by the Mexican president at the National Palace on May 2.

The presidents highlighted the importance of dealing with migration from a humane perspective and reiterated their commitment to continue expanding normal routes of movement in the region, so that migrants can apply for permits from their countries of origin.

They also touched on the issue of development in the region and agreed on the importance of promoting measures that promote equality and economic growth in both countries, and generate more prosperity among their populations.

With regard to combating fentanyl and arms smuggling, the presidents affirmed their commitment to combating this scourge that causes a lot of harm to both societies.

They highlighted the formation of a presidential commission to deal with arms and fentanyl smuggling, as well as the upcoming launch of a bi-national campaign to prevent drug abuse.

Finally, they addressed border modernization and reaffirmed their commitment to working together to improve infrastructure and services in the region, for the benefit of border communities and bilateral trade.

In particular, they highlight Biden’s recent signing of a presidential authorization to proceed with the expansion of the second Mexicali land port of entry, and to be able to finish this project by the end of the current year.
