Heavy rain and standing water caused the Formula 3 race at Silverstone to be postponed on Saturday.The dangers of track conditions became apparent when Gabriele Mini ended up with his Prema on the gravel, at Stowe corner, when he was simply rolling from the pit lane to the Formula 1 pit lane.Two other Rodin cars also ended up in the gravel with him.
The race was initially scheduled to start at 10:20am for Spain, but before it was confirmed that the race would be postponed, the pit lane opening time for cars to head onto the track was pushed back by two occasions.
After the safety car had done a few laps to check the track conditions, the final decision was made to postpone the test. Already on his first lap, Bernd Maylander showed how dangerous the conditions were by sliding in the SC, an Aston Martin Vantage.
Van Amersfoort Racing’s Mexican driver Noel Leon is set to start from pole position with the grid partially reversed, ahead of one of the Prema drivers, Arvid Lindblad, whose recent form has pushed him into the battle for the championship.
ART’s Christian Mansell was confident of closing the gap to the front runners, taking fifth on the grid. Hitech’s standout race man and overall leader Luke Browning completed the top ten.
It has not yet been confirmed whether the Formula 3 race will be rescheduled, although it is likely to take place later this Saturday as Sunday’s programme is packed with the main F3 and F2 races as well as a Porsche Supercup test, before the Formula 3 race.
