Prime Minister Chris Hipkins says the New Zealand Clean Car Rebate has been a huge success in encouraging the adoption of electrified vehicles and has made a significant contribution to the country’s climate goals. Since the program began in July 2021, 156,000 rebates have been granted to electric and hybrid vehicle customers, reaching a total of 150,000 milestones in September, the latest data reveals.
As a result of the clean car rebate, more than 50% of all new and imported vehicles registered in New Zealand are now electrified vehicles. This increase in adoption has had a tangible impact on reducing emissions, with an average 33% reduction in emissions from newly registered vehicles from July 2021.
Transport Minister David Parker highlighted the success of the Clean Car Discount, with only 39% of electric and hybrid vehicle registrations up from 53% in July 2022 and June 2023. Additionally, average carbon dioxide emissions from newly registered vehicles have reached a record 126 grams per km, compared to 188 grams per km when the program began.
The Clean Car Rebate has been instrumental in transitioning New Zealand’s vehicle fleet to a greener approach. In contrast to the 30% decline in petrol and diesel vehicles, adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles has increased by a remarkable 180% year-on-year. The program has had a transformative effect, especially when it was extended in April 2022 to promote hybrid vehicles and encourage higher emissions.
According to a study by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency (EECA), 62% of electric vehicle owners bought their vehicles earlier than originally planned because of the clean car rebate. This indicates that the policy has had a significant impact on promoting the adoption of electrified vehicles.
The evidence is clear: the clean car rebate increases the number of electrified vehicles on the roads and plays a key role in reducing emissions. It is an important policy tool for achieving New Zealand’s climate targets.
