The Galaxy S23 Ultra is Samsung’s most powerful smartphone today. The powerful version is committed to high performance, including its camera, which combines the Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2 For Galaxy processor and powerful lens array with a 200MP adaptive pixel sensor.
Moving on, there is a way to take more amazing photos, but not many Galaxy users know about it. The suggestion is to combine the S23 Ultra with the unique Expert RAW camera feature, which allows you to take professional-grade photos directly from the native camera app.
The great advantage of shooting in RAW format is that images are captured without any kind of compression, digital processing, filtering, or image alteration, leaving the file ready to be edited manually, as professional photographers do. In other words, the app presents “raw” digital images, with all the data captured by the sensor.
Learn how to install and use Expert RAW on the Galaxy S23 Ultra below.
Download the app
First, you need to download the Expert RAW app. To do this, open the Camera app and tap on “More” in the lower right corner. Then the Expert Raw icon will appear right at the top of the screen. Click on it and download the app for free. Expert Raw is now integrated into your camera and ready to use!
Practical experience
Of course, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 200MP main sensor lens and high-quality front camera come in handy. But with Expert RAW it is possible to capture images up to 50 megapixels, allowing a smartphone to capture and store images like no other phone can. The app also lets you shoot with greater clarity, with a wider dynamic range than regular RAW files, as well as exposure and ISO settings.
For day or night shots, you can control both functions by clicking “EV” as well as “ISO” in the camera’s options bar. With the first note the increase or decrease in sharpness, that is, control the exposure of the highlights and shadows. To do this, after clicking on “EV”, move the ruler to the right or left, depending on what best suits the environment.
The same thing happens with “ISO” sensitivity, which strives for good image quality, starting with just enough light hitting the image sensor. In brighter lighting conditions, it is best to use a lower ISO. On the other hand, the less light available, the higher the ISO compensation is needed. As you move the ruler, you can see how the focus of the light changes. Experiment and find the best ISO for you.
Now, if your goal is to take a sharper or moving picture, then shutter control is going to be your best friend. For example, slow shutter speeds can create beautiful streaks of light and even water effects, while faster shutter speeds result in darker images but allow you to capture fast-moving objects without blurring the results. To try it, select the “speed” icon and explore the numbers that show how long the shutter stays open in seconds.
Focus on what really matters
Equipped with Dual Pixel technology, the S23 Ultra’s Ultra Wide Angle Camera and Telephoto Camera guarantee high-resolution images, which, combined with Super Quad Pixel technology, allows you to take pictures with crystal-clear precision, thanks to the improved autofocus function.
But did you know that Expert RAW offers the ability to manually adjust focus and expand the possibilities of photographic recordings? Clicking “Focus” will center the object. You will then see that when the focus ruler is set, the object in position will be marked with a green border. He will be interested in helping you find the perfect approach.
Going further, the app allows you to set separate points for focus and exposure. Press and hold the viewfinder to adjust the focus point until the AF/AE ring flashes yellow. So you can move separate focus and exposure points. Great, right?
Finding a balance of tones
Many have heard of white balance, but not many know exactly how it works. This function indicates the effects of temperature and color tone on photographs. Therefore, changing the white balance setting will help balance the colors and achieve a more natural effect. With them it is possible to create a sepia effect, for example.
The balance is measured in Kelvin (Kelvin) and can be set between blue/cool (2300K) and red/warm (10000K). The result is usually around 5,000 K, which is the balance of tones. On the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera with Expert RAW integration, the feature is referred to by the acronym “WB”. Click and try it.
Expert RAW is available on several Samsung Galaxy models, including the Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra, Galaxy S22, S22+, S22 Ultra, Z Fold4, S21 Ultra, Z Fold3, S20 Ultra, Note20 Ultra, and Z Fold2.
* Availability of features may vary depending on the device model and One UI OS version installed on the device.
