The UN official said on his “X” account (formerly Twitter): “I condemn in the strongest terms the horrific attack on the medical center.”
He stressed that attacks against civilians are unacceptable and that hospitals, facilities and medical personnel enjoy special protection under international humanitarian law.
“Civilians can no longer pay the price. “The horror and violence must stop,” he noted.
Earlier, UNICEF Secretary-General, Chatrin Russell, said that she was horrified by the attack, which occurred in the midst of an Israeli attack against the coastal strip.
The Director-General of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said in a statement: “I am horrified by reports of the killing and injury of children and women.”
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of committing the massacre and described it as a war crime.
The president, who called for Israel to be placed in the dock, said that what happened last night is a great tragedy and a terrible war crime that cannot be tolerated or allowed.
He stressed that it is an unforgivable crime, and therefore the occupation government has crossed all red lines, and we will not allow it to escape responsibility and punishment.
Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari rejected this account, and stated that the explosion was caused by a defective missile launched by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, which in turn denied this accusation.
To justify his position, Hajari showed photos, videos, and an alleged conversation between Hamas militia members.
