CARSON, Calif. (AP) — In a friendly in which both teams relied primarily on players with no international experience, it was the goalkeepers who stood out as the USA tied Colombia 0-0 on Saturday.
Shawn Johnson kept zero at the fence for the sixth time in his career. Colombia also did not allow a goal to be scored in a duel in which they played time with different goalkeepers – Alvaro Montero in the first and Jose Luis Chunga in the second.
Four other players from the United States made their first-team debuts during the match at Dignity Health Sports Park, home of the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The group, led by interim coach Anthony Hudson, scored just once in two friendlies played this week in Southern California as part of their traditional January training camp.
Hudson brought another match of experience to a squad with just five players who participated in the recent World Cup in Qatar. Eight players made their debuts Wednesday night in the loss against Serbia, the most in a US national team game in 30 years.
Colombian coach Nestor Lorenzo also begins to define the team. The Argentine took over the national team last year, after Cafeteros was excluded from the World Cup.
