UN considers photos of semi-naked Palestinians detained in Gaza “disturbing”
The United Nations considers “deeply disturbing” the photos leaked today of dozens of Palestinians detained in Gaza, half-naked, while surrounded by members of the Israeli army watching.
“The images we saw this morning are very disturbing because every person has the right to human dignity, and the images we saw today of how people are treated are very disturbing,” said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General.
The photos are part of a video showing about 100 Palestinian adults wearing underwear, most of them bare-chested, sitting on the ground on a street that appears to be in Gaza because it bears signs of being bombed.
Some of them are riding in a truck, and in fact another later photo shows Israeli military trucks transporting dozens of men crammed and without clothes into their trailers.
A third photo shows what appears to be the same group, kneeling on the ground, blindfolded, surrounded by Israeli soldiers in field uniforms, on sandy ground that appears to have been tampered with by bulldozers.
EFE consulted with the Israeli army regarding these images, which promised to provide details on this matter. Local journalists from the Strip commented on some of the photos, saying that they belonged to civilians who were captured in Gaza towns such as Beit Lahia. (Effy)
