The United States uses its veto power against the UN Security Council resolution calling for the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza
The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a humanitarian truce in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement to allow aid to reach the Gaza Strip.
A vote on the text drafted by Brazil was postponed twice over the past two days, as the United States tried to negotiate aid access to Gaza. On Wednesday, 12 members voted in favor of the draft resolution, Russia and Britain abstained from voting, and the United States, a permanent member of the Security Council, used its veto against it because the text does not mention Israel’s right to defend itself.
“Yes, decisions are important. And yes, this Council must speak out. But the actions we take must be based on facts on the ground and support direct diplomatic efforts. This can save lives,” said US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield. , before the 15 council members after the vote: “The council must do this right.”
China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun accused the United States of making council members believe the resolution could be adopted after it failed to comment or express its opposition during the negotiations. “The final result of the vote is nothing short of amazing,” he criticized.
For its part, the United Kingdom abstained because it believes that the resolution should be clearer regarding Israel’s right to defend itself, and because it ignores the fact that Hamas is using innocent civilians as human shields.
Russia is the other country that abstained from voting. Two amendments were made to the resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire and an end to the indiscriminate attacks launched by Israel on Gaza, but the United States objected to the two amendments and only six and seven votes supported them, respectively, which is an insufficient number for the necessary majority of nine votes. . The Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, criticized, saying: “We have just witnessed once again the hypocrisy and double standards of our American colleagues.”
