President Sukarno was the first head of state to visit Cuba after the revolutionary victory achieved on January 1, 1959, when diplomatic relations were established between the two countries, which reached their sixty-third anniversary this year.
The Cuban Foreign Ministry stated on its official website that historic bilateral relations were established on the basis of friendship and conformity of principles between President Sukarno and Supreme Commander Fidel Castro, in defense of sovereignty and social justice.
Since then, Cuba and Indonesia have maintained strong relations of friendship and cooperation, based on mutual respect, which the government of the Caribbean country intends to maintain, according to public statements made by its President Miguel Díaz-Canel and other senior Cuban officials.
