By the end of June, 1,493,037 non-resident visitors had arrived in the country, an increase of 204,159 compared to the same period in 2023, according to the Institute for Smokeless Industry.

He pointed out that this continuous increase since last January reflects that heavy rains and road infrastructure problems did not negatively affect activity in general.

He stressed that expectations for the conclusion of the current annual period are very positive, expecting the number of visitors to reach at least three million visitors, an increase of 15 percent.

“We continue to work to show the world the wonders our country has to offer,” said the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT).

The new authorities of this entity plan to attract an additional 1.5 million foreign visitors during their four-year term, which means a 58 percent increase compared to the number recorded in 2023.

Achieving this goal will require actions outlined in the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan, said its president, Harris Whitbeck, who described strengthening alliances with communities and local governments.

The conference included entrepreneurs, tour operators, public and private sector initiatives to improve infrastructure, in addition to airports and roads, as well as dialogue and cooperation with sectors related to the aforementioned industry.

The former CNN journalist highlighted that we will maintain close ties with the country’s consulates around the world to promote tourism, with a focus on achieving an annual average of four million and 100 thousand tourists by the end of 2028.

The CEO added that we will implement the National Tourism Safety Program which will ensure the protection and well-being of pedestrians.

Whitbeck also reflected that managing and promoting destinations, ensuring competitive services, building public-private alliances and improving infrastructure will contribute to this mission.

Official data from Ingoat shows that 2.6 million visitors visited various destinations last year for leisure purposes.

This sector is one of the main sources of job creation and contributes to improving the economic conditions of communities.

The impact of this activity is very strong, not only for the people who work in the industry without chimneys, but also for those who benefit indirectly in Guatemala.
