He said that our country will speak out against Israel’s attempts to set fire to the region, during a speech he delivered at a ceremony held in the capital to mark the founding day of the ruling Justice and Development Party.

At the end of last July, the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement, Ismail Haniyeh, was assassinated as a result of an attack on his residence in Tehran, where he had arrived to participate in the inauguration of the new president of that movement.

Hamas blamed Israel and the United States and warned that the attack would not go unanswered.

Meanwhile, official representatives from Tel Aviv said they would not comment on the case, and later, Washington’s alternate representative to the United Nations, Robert Wood, announced that his country had nothing to do with the murder.

For his part, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Irani, told the Security Council that Tehran, according to international law, reserves the right to self-defense and will respond to Haniyeh’s killing when it deems it appropriate.

On October 7, 2023, a coordinated Hamas attack on more than 20 Israeli communities killed nearly 1,200 people, wounded about 5,500 others, and took 253 hostages, about 100 of whom were later released in prisoner exchanges.

In response, Israel declared war on Hamas and began a bombing campaign on the Gaza Strip, including its civilian facilities, which has so far left more than 39,600 Palestinians dead and more than 93,000 wounded. It also declared a comprehensive blockade of the Strip, which has cut off supplies of water, electricity, fuel, food and medicine.
