Nguyen Thanh Ha explained that after more than 20 years of work, the MAG Quang Binh project has successfully detected and disabled more than 147,000 devices and carried out nearly 2,800 communication activities to prevent accidents caused by bombs and mines.

According to the programme manager, in the period 2021-2025 alone, MAG plans to invest more than $16.25 million to transform this territory in central Vietnam into an unexploded ordnance-free zone.

The activities carried out by the British organization have contributed significantly to raising public awareness on preventing bomb and mine accidents and clearing land for local social and economic development, said Nguyen Wau, Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Foreign Affairs.

According to the National Mine Action Center of Vietnam, between 600,000 and 800,000 tons of unexploded ordnance left over from the war against the United States remain hidden underground in about 18 percent of the national territory.

Since 1975 alone, when the shameful and final withdrawal of American troops from Indochina took place, more than 40,000 people have died and about 60,000 have been injured and maimed as a result of the explosion of these devices.
