Washington, March 28 (EFE). US authorities have launched an investigation to determine if Tesla Model X seat belts are malfunctioning, after two users reported problems with the front seats.
The investigation is the second the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched this month to investigate the luxury electric car maker’s manufacturing operations.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Investigation of Defects (OID) indicated that the possible defect prevents the seat belt from locking and releasing.
According to documentation posted on OID’s website, the defect appears to be a manufacturing issue since two components of the seatbelt “were not properly connected during assembly”.
The two known accidents occurred in low mileage vehicles.
The OID noted that the issue may affect up to 50,000 Model X units from 2022 and 2023.
The federal agency will now investigate Tesla’s manufacturing operations to determine how often the problem occurs and how many units it affects.
The investigation may cause federal authorities to issue a subpoena to fix the problem.
In early March, OID launched another investigation after the steering wheels of two 2023 Tesla Model Ys came off due to a missing screw holding them to the steering column. EFE
