US Supreme Court grants partial immunity to Donald Trump – Juventud Rebelde

The US Supreme Court ruled on Monday that Republican Donald Trump enjoys some immunity as a former president, in a ruling that postpones his trial for allegedly trying to change the outcome of the 2020 election, DW reported.

By a vote of six conservative justices to three (progressive justices), the court ruled that “the President does not enjoy immunity for his unofficial acts,” but “he is at least entitled to a presumption of immunity for his official acts.”

Shortly after, Trump celebrated the Supreme Court ruling. “A great victory for our Constitution and our Democracy. PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN,” Trump wrote in large letters on his Truth Social platform.

Trump is the Republican candidate who will challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the US elections scheduled for November 5, in a rematch from four years ago.

The court’s slow handling of the case actually helped Trump by making it unlikely that any prosecution on these charges brought by special prosecutor Jack Smith would be completed before the election.

Trump has said he is immune from prosecution because he was president when he took the actions that led to the charges. Smith has opposed presidential immunity on the grounds that no one is above the law.

For its part, Biden’s campaign team strongly criticized Trump on Monday after the ruling. He added, “Donald Trump collapsed after losing the 2020 elections and incited the mob to change the results.” “He believes he is above the law and is willing to do anything to gain and keep power.”
