NEW YORK — New York Yankees coach Aaron Boone has been suspended for one game after his recent ejection, admitting that their repeated arguments may have created an unsavory image of him in the minds of the umpires.
“Well, I guess I earned that reputation,” Boone said Friday, before he was suspended and fined by Major League Baseball.
Michael Hill, MLB’s vice president of baseball operations, announced the penalty. Major League Baseball said the disciplinary action followed Boone’s “recent conduct” toward umpires, “including actions following his ejection from a Thursday night game against the Baltimore Orioles.”
Boone had to miss Friday night’s game, the first of the series, against the San Diego Padres.
It’s Boone’s fourth ejection of the season, and the most in a major. This time, he was angered by referee Edwin Moscoso’s strike zone during a game New York lost 3-1.
Boone raised four fingers as he punted midway through the third inning, an apparent sign that the plate umpire had missed a four-pitch.
Bonn was also upset when Moscoso pulled away from him during the argument, while crew chief Chris Guccione stood between them as the driver tried to approach the Venezuelan again.
Boone had spat at the referee during the argument.
“I think there’s probably occasional bias,” Boone said. “We are human beings. I’m sure some people don’t want to hear about me.”
Boone was ejected against the Cleveland Guardians on April 12, against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 15 and in Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.
